Shannaghmore Outdoor Learning Centre

A recently refurbished residential centre located at the heart of the Mourne Mountains with the Irish Sea coast at its doorstep. Shannaghmore is the perfect escape for budding adventurers.

Shannaghmore Outdoor Learning Centre is located on the edge of the Mourne Mountains just outside Newcastle, County Down.  The Centre has direct access to mountains, forests, rivers, lakes and the Irish Sea coast. The rich local environment offers opportunity for hillwalking, rock climbing, camping, canoeing, mountain biking and orienteering. The extensive onsite facilities also include three ropes courses (low/high), a lake, an archery range, a climbing wall, a mountain bike trail, orienteering courses, a nightline, zip line and an outdoor football pitch. 

The location of the site and the natural environment surrounding it offers great opportunities for the Centres specialisms of mountain & land based training, adult training, curriculum links, progression routes for young people, volunteer and instructor development to be achieved.

The Centre currently delivers a level 2 hillwalking course which is accredited by EA, to teaching and youth work staff.  This focuses on participants who deliver outdoor learning programmes within their schools or youth group’s e.g. Duke of Edinburgh / Joint Initiative Awards.

This Centre provides curriculum programmes for schools and youth groups all year round, midweek and weekend.  

Accomodation

Shannaghmore can cater for up to 56 young people and staff within the main building and bunkhouse accommodation.  

There is a number of buildings on site containing group work rooms, chill out areas and a large dining hall and lounge for your group to congregate during the evening time.  

Shannaghmore also has a small campsite that can be used for Duke of Edinburgh training and expeditions.   The campsite has a paved area where a BBQ can be used.  There is a toilet and shower block a short walk away.

Preferential rates (previously referred to as a bursary), may be offered for bookings. All camp site rates are based on self-catering and self-programming, if your group require outdoor instructor support from EA Outdoor Learning services additional costs will apply based on need and subject to availability of staff.
