Stakeholder Engagement Event: The Impact of Violence Against Young Women

On Tuesday evening, we hosted a stakeholder engagement event on the impact of violence against young women.  Over 100 young people and youth workers from across Belfast attended the evening at Colin Youth Development Centre and shared their views and opinions.

North Belfast Area Project Young Voice group, shared a story on revenge porn which was a true story from a young women in North Belfast.  They highlighted her struggles with an abusive relationship and her words on how to avoid this happening to other young women in the future.

The group also shared a book “From Our Point of View” which they have written on a number of issues facing young women including violence and abuse.   Every attendee was able to leave with a copy.

We later heard from the West Belfast PSNI where Ross and Lorna from the neighbourhood team shared some of their experiences from their role within the community and real stories of women who have faced domestic abuse.  They shared their advice on what to do if you are at risk or being affected by abuse.

On the evening, all attendees got a quick masterclass in self protection which was then followed by a marketplace, where attendees had the opportunity to talk with numerous stakeholders and charities who came along to support the event.

  • Common Youth
  • Women’s Aid
  • EA FLARE Team

Young people attending had the opportunity to learn from Common Youth around the different types of abuse, ask the PSNI officers any questions they had in an informal setting and hear the work that Women’s Aid are doing within local communities and how they can support.

The key learning from this event will form a report and will feed into the Youth Service Regional Assessment of Need which will shape youth services and the support and programmes developed for years to come.

Well done to the teams from North, East, South & West Belfast who worked together to deliver such an impactful event and thank you to all our attendees and stakeholders for giving up their evening to attend and share their views and opinions with us.
